Are you planning a trip to Monterey Bay? Consider yourself lucky. There’s much to do in the beautiful area south of San Francisco. Let us give you a list of places to explore.

17 Mile Drive

For a $10.50 fee, you can take a leisurely drive along the coast to see how the other half lives. Besides getting a view of beautiful estates, you also can see the Pacific coastline at its finest. Stop at the overlooks, aptly titled Restless Sea, Cypress Tree, and Ancient Forest. You will also get a view of the Pebble Beach golf course.

Time you’re journey so you are hungry as you take the drive. Restaurants along the route will refund the $10 you spent on the toll by taking the money off your lunch bill.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Plan on spending a lot of time (and a lot of money) at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Insiders say you should get there right when the aquarium opens at 10 a.m. and immediately head to specific exhibits to watch the scheduled feedings. The entry fee is $50 each, so you might as well spend all day to get your money’s worth.

Those who have visited commented about spending a great deal of time at the jellyfish and penguin exhibits.

Old Fisherman’s Wharf

If you would like to visit an area specially created for tourists, you must visit Old Fisherman’s Wharf. The original pier was built in the 1870s, and the area was known for being integral to the sardine industry before WWII.

Now, tourists stroll along the wharf, trying the clam chowder from the various restaurants along the way. Stop and watch the otters and sea lions that gather nearby.

Cannery Row

Consider reading John Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row before you visit this tourist destination. By reading the book, you will get a view of what the area was like before the sardine industry left the area. Look for the statue honoring Steinbeck as you wander the tourist center.

Currently, many souvenir shops and restaurants line the row. It’s a great place to purchase a t-shirt and people watch!

San Carlos Cathedral

Whether you are Catholic or not, consider stopping at the San Carlos Cathedral. Built in 1794, it is the oldest continuously running Catholic church in California.

MST Trolley

Although the trolley in itself is not a tourist destination, it is helpful for tourists to get around the Monterey Bay area. The trolley rides are free, and they have scheduled stops in front of the places you want to go to. Ride the trolley, so you don’t have to worry about finding parking in the crowded tourist areas.

Monterey State Historic Park

This free museum/park is a great way to learn about the history of California. You will learn about the Spanish influence on the area while strolling through the lush grounds full of colorful blooms. Visit the replica of the old Custom House as well.

There’s plenty of things to see and do in Monterey Bay, but make sure you take the time to get away from the tourist destinations to enjoy the beautiful Pacific Coast.
